Developing a new generation of African classical musicians

Education

Masterclasses, Mentorship and Workshops

Over the last 10 years the NOK Foundation have developed educational programmes, mentorship, masterclasses and workshops as part of their New Horizons Festival initiative to train and develop a new generation of musicians and artists through the NOK orchestra and the Living Legacies Archive. These programmes challenge young up-and-coming artists creatively, intellectually and conceptually to foster mutual understanding of cultural differences, enabling the next generation to thrive.

The NOK Foundation have created an annual music award for an extraordinarily talented and gifted young musician from Nigeria to encourage and support them in the early stages of their career. This includes; purchase of instruments, study abroad, research and performance opportunities. The award was created to honour the 19th century composer and virtuoso violinist, Joseph Antonio Emidy who traversed three continents from West Africa, to Brazil, Portugal through Trans-Atlantic slavery, the Napoleonic Wars before finally landing in Cornwall where he established their first Philharmonic orchestra.

The NOK Orchestra has a new dedicated space in Central Portugal to host artist residencies and retreats for cultural exchange, mentorship and to create and develop new and existing repertoire. We are delighted to introduce Casa Da Musica - a sanctuary for artists seeking solitude, inspiration, and a deep connection with nature in an ecologically conscious environment. Nestled within the mountainous region of Central Portugal our residency space provides a quiet refuge, allowing artists to enrich their creative process, escape the noise of modern life and tap into the stillness of their surroundings.
